James Activity

The three missions of the James as part of the Natural Reserve System of the University of California are to support Research, Teaching, and Outreach activities.  Below are some photos depicting each of these activities that are occurring at the James.

 Research

At the James Reserve we have a variety of short-term and long-term studies being conducted by researchers from the University of California system as well as other state and national institutions. The James Reserve provides a variety of ecosystem to species level research opportunities and here are a few photographs of some of these research activities.  If you should want to conduct research at the James Reserve, please visit our Applying to do Research page on how to proceed.

Teaching

Each year the James Reserve welcomes several hundred students from college to elementary classes.  Our ample modern facilities provide comfortable places for students to stay and our classroom and nature trails are excellent facilities for a variety of field oriented classes. If you should want to bring your class to the James please visit our Scheduling a Visit page for details on how you will be able to make the necessary arrangements.

 Outreach

Each year besides receiving researchers and classes, the James Reserve hosts public groups engaged in a variety of activities.  If you and your group are interested in the James hosting your activity, please contact us to discuss the possibility. We further extend our outreach beyond the James by giving presentations to a variety of venues.  If your interested in having one of us give a presentation to your group or school, please contact the Assistant Director at john.laundre@ucr.edu.
